Unit 3-Teaching Strategy 2

Rodney Pyatte

 KWL Chart

Source (Where did this come from?): Study Guides and Strategies

 http://www.studygs.net/texred3.htm

Competency Goal 2 The learner will explore and analyze information from a variety of sources

Give a thorough description of the strategy and how it will be implemented. This should be a summary of the strategy according to the original source:

KWL charts are intended to be an exercise for a study group or class that can guide you in reading and understanding a text. It can be used to work alone, but discussions definitely help. This exercise has three stages:  K- which stands for know, before you read as a group you will go through and list everything you know on the given topic , discussion is encouraged to formulate what is most important.

W- Want, This stage allows students to preview the reading glance through and find out what it is that they really want to know about this topic. Generate list of questions as a group.

L-Learned, This stage allows us to go back and answer the questions that we proposed in the W section of our chart

Explain why you think this strategy will work. How does the strategy help your students learn?

This strategy will work because it looks at reading in three different ways. It looks at reading before you start, during the actual reading and at the end of the reading assignment. This strategy encourages students to be active readers.

Instructional Strategy 1

Rodney Pyatte

Name of Strategy: Reciprocal Teaching

Source (Where did this come from?): Reading Quest

Link to the Strategy: www.readingquest.org

Give a thorough description of the strategy and how it will be implemented. This should be a summary of the strategy according to the original source:

I really like this method a lot because it is similar to literature circles. You break the students into groups of four and assign each student one of four roles: Summarizing, Questioning, Clarifying, and Predicting. The group as a whole will read a few pages of the selected reading and then each student will work on his or her individual role. The idea of this strategy is to give the students four different perspectives on the same section of reading Those of you who know lit. circles will see the similarities. The key to reciprocal learning is making sure that your students are comfortable with the four roles that they will have to use. Allow students to practice these roles and become comfortable using them before attempting to use.

Explain what part of the standard course of study is addressed by this activity.

Working in group setting, understanding content, analyze reading content, viewing and understanding content from different perspectives.

Explain why you think this strategy will work. How does the strategy help your students learn?

Students will be able to take on different roles and understand that there are many different things to think about when reading. I think this will work because I believe in lit. circles and this strategy is very similar

Unit 3 Instructional Strategies Summary

As I was looking through these instructional strategies from numerous websites, I found a great deal of things that I will surely be able to use in the classroom. It is important that we have knowledge of the many different strategies that are available for teachers. Looking through some of these websites has brought back some ideas that I remembered using as a student. Things like KWL and Venn diagrams are things I can remember using and being successful in my use of them. Many things I found are new to me but I hope to incorporate as much as I can into my classroom. With inclusion becoming more and more an everyday thing, teachers should be prepared to have effective strategies that students of all learning levels can relate to. Being well versed in these ideas and using them effectively can really make a difference in your job and what your students are able to understand.

PBS Teachers

www.pbs.org/teachers/

PBS Teachers was another great site. It offers a lot for any teacher. There are many things that I enjoyed about this site. First of all on the front page there are current up to date headlines. Which I thought was great! This site also has units and lesson plans that are listed courtesy of edhelper.com.  Which included a unit on all fifty states…..Nice ! The unit on NC must have included at least 80 worksheets and maps of North Carolina. PBS Teachers seemed like a great site. The only thing is that a lot of the lesson plans that came directly from that site were dealing with a series that they were selling called American Masters. But the overall ideas of the lesson plans could be used and manipulated for your classroom pleasure.

NC Wise Owl

NC Wise owl was a pretty good site. The first time I looked at it I wasn’t impressed. So I waited a day when I had more time. Turns out I really liked the site. I linked off to the Grolier online section and found a lot of useful information. I really like the lands and people section. This section allows you to retrieve information about numerous countries. I looked at a lot of the stuff on the United States, Africa and Asia. The site also provided a number of lesson plans. I really like the way the site divides into categories like middle school, professional, media etc.

Web English Teacher

www.webenglishteacher.com

Web English Teacher- Very good website. Detailed website that offers a variety of tools. This website offers detailed links and alternatives to traditional book reports. There were many ideas including a festival that honored the literature you were reading and a sandwich station book review both of which accomplish the same thing as a regular book report in a non –traditional way. I’m a person who has always been captivated by mythology …. So take a look at the many different links to mythology because they are great. Other important features to this website include sections on media, journalism, poetry and study guides. Study guides included are Beowulf, The Odyssey, and To kill a Mocking Bird plus many others. The site flows well and is easy to navigate through. On the main page you have information concerning the current month. For example the month of May is national egg month, Cinco de Mayo, Memorial Day, information on events like the Kentucky Derby and the Indy 500 are also listed. Interesting website …… One that is a must see for any Language Arts teacher..

Read-Write-Think

www.readwritethink.org

Read Write Think- Overall this was a good website. It had a lot of interesting information dealing with language arts. This website offered very detailed lesson plans. One of the plans I looked at was a lesson plan for Poe’s Tell-Tale Heart. This lesson plan is broken down into 5 hour long sessions. One of the sessions includes showing clips from an episode of The Simpsons where Homer recites “The Raven” It’s lessons like these that can peak the interest of students and can keep them interested in literature that they may dread or have trouble understanding. At the end of all the lessons you are provided with information showing what standards that you are addressing. Other valuable aspects of this website include a web resources link that provides links to reading lists, book reviews, and student news. There is also a section for student links which include everything from Venn diagrams to a literary elements map. Many resources for your students or for you to give your students. The only downside to this website was that it only offered information for language arts. It does however offer a search index to link you science and math guys to some lesson plans.  Overall a fantastic website with lots of information.
